Primary Role

Yasmine Johnson gave evidence to the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion on 13 July 2026. She confirmed she is one of the national coordinators of Students for Palestine, involved since 2019, which has student collectives on at least 21 campuses across five states and helped establish university encampments including those at the University of Sydney and Deakin University. She was personally one of the organisers of the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at the University of Sydney in 2024. She described the group's aims as including to "demand a free Palestine from the river to the sea".

Under questioning she agreed she had chanted "globalise the intifada" and "there's only one solution, intifada revolution", saying she meant resistance, civil disobedience and protest. Asked whether Jewish students' fear changed things, she said: "I don't think the Palestine movement is responsible for anyone's lack of safety", and: "I don't think the legitimacy of social justice movements rests on them never offending anyone." Asked about a suggested connection between the encampment and Hizb ut-Tahrir, she said the group was not involved "in any kind of formal organisational sense" and that she was not aware of members attending informally.

In August 2026 OneNews (Brooke Mercer) reported that the national school walkout against Pauline Hanson was "run by Socialist Alternative", stating: "Yasmine Johnson runs the walkout for the NUS. She's a Socialist Alternative member."

The Australian reported in September 2024, from University of Sydney emails obtained under Freedom of Information, that the university was first warned in early May 2024 that Hizb ut-Tahrir was present at the pro-Palestine encampment on campus; Nine newspapers reported HT's involvement on 16 June 2024, and the Vice-Chancellor and a senior official then met NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley and senior police "to seek further information in relation to Hizb ut Tahrir in the wake of recent media reports". The university said police had raised no concerns with it about HT (The Australian, Noah Yim, 25 Sep 2024).
